Segway ES e-scooters receive 1.5 firmware update for smoother braking

The populair Segway ES e-scooters have received a new firmware update. Version v0.1.5.0 introduces stronger and smoother braking, and will show up on the user’s smartphone app.

Users of firmware 1.4.7 complained that it introduced very aggressive automatic braking, which seems to be fixed with this new update. Users on Reddit tested the new firmware and wrote the following:

  • THE BRAKE, this is the best breaking algorithm so far, it now breaks like a real break. I mean is now fluently breaking from soft to hard as I push the break lever down(like it should from the beginning as the acceleration lever). And when I’m in cruise control at max speed, it doesn’t brutally break when I push the break.

  • THE SPEED, now I can get 33kmh on downhill WITHOUT any speed breaking like it did with the 1.4.7 firmware(bunny hopping speed), it goes smoothly all the way down the hill. Ok, it was a max 10° hill , so I didn’t pushed it on bigger hills. But on flat I still reach only 30-31kmh with my 85kg.

  • THE BATTERY LIFE, as my daily commute is a well established way, I can test it very well, last night I charged the scooter at 95%(ES4) and I did the same way(~6km) and left with 75% when I reached my office. Last update was taking 5% more, for example, I charged the scooter to 100% and it left me with 75% too. So maybe the regeneration is doing a greater job now. 👍

  • Acceleration is smoother in red S mode. No skidding.

  • Braking is smoother but feels ok. No hard braking, specially when going top speed or downhill.

  • Top speed limited to 27km/h with battery at 60%. This make the scooter ride smoother than before. Before it would reach 31km/h and then go to 30km/h, then 31km/h, then 30km/h. It was annoying. Now it just tops 27 and stays there (would love to go up to 29 or 30).

  • Top speed in white S mode is 24km/h with battery at 60%.

  • Battery seems to last a tiny bit more. It used to consume 27% in my daily commute. Today it drained 25%. I will update this with more testing. Maybe it’s because energy recovering is now working back again?

  • Energy recovery works again. Strong setting does brake the scooter and you can see that energy goes back to battery as seen in this graph.
