E AXIS is a electric skateboard with all technology hidden in the trucks

Berlin based JayKay is a relatively new electric skateboard company that focusses on hand made electric longboards products. Their newest addition is a longboard kit called the E AXIS. A process that took 5 years from idea to finished product. All without using prebuilt parts from China, by manufacturing almost everything themselves to create the perfect fit.

Magical Trucks

So what makes the E AXIS stand out? On the outside it looks like a normal skateboard. You won’t see a big battery pack at the bottom of the deck, or any wires. So where do they store their magic? All electronics are inside the trucks, even the battery. Each truck carries four battery cells and a very thin motherboard to control the motors. E AXIS promises a top speed of 35 km/h. As there is less space for the battery, you get a maximum range of about 15 kilometers. But that is more than enough for the casual hop on and go rider.

The Ring

Normally with electric skateboards, you need a remote to accelerate and brake. JayKay went back to the drawing board for a refreshing new concept that follows the rule of the E AXIS in that you should not see any technology. You control the E AXIS with a small bluetooth ring. On the side of the ring is a small wheel that you simply push to go forward or brake.

The ring has a display that tells you the speed, battery status and the driving mode. By moving your finger to the left, you can switch through the menu, change the driving mode, switch the lights on and off and view the total kilometers traveled so far.

With most electric skateboards, if you run out of battery it becomes a pain to ride. As the wheels don’t roll easily without a charge to push the motors. E AXIS solves this by having a unique winding on their motors, which means that they have 100 percent free-wheel motion. The advantage for riders is clear: If the battery is empty, you do not have to carry your board, but can continue to cruise as normal by pushing. Without any rolling resistance.

JayKay does it’s best to try and hide any technology. And it definitely shows in the end product. No visible cables and electronics or even a power button. The board switches itself on after reaching a speed of 3 km / h and it switches off if it is not moved for more than 10 seconds.

If you want a electric skateboard that has cutting edge technology, with hand-made parts and German labour, you gotta save up. The E AXIS kit starts at €1999,- for two trunks and the ring, or €2149,- for a complete package with a deck, both available on JayKay.
